Two words, duty cycle. The 3.5 Ecoboost in the Transit Van is significantly derated because of the higher GVWR. An F250/350 with a GCWR of only 13,000 pounds (like the Ecoboost in the Transit) would not be very competitive. I could see an Ecoboost being used in the SuperDuty, but like the OP speculates I think it would be a V8 of 4.5-5 liters with a power output similar to the current 6.2 and more low-end torque, much like the comparison between the current 3.5 Eco and the 5.0 Coyote.
