It's certainly got the power. I wonder if the 10,000lb tow rating for the 1/2 ton are assuming almost no one will do it but once you jump up to the bigger trucks, you will get people pushing those limits.
In two words: Duty cycle.
The 3.5 can't hang with a heavy duty cycle. It wasn't built to do the work in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.
There is a reason that my tractor only has 63 HP with a pretty big engine. I can run it all day long at 63 HP and it will be fine after 40 years.
Try that with an Ecoboost and see what happens. :E
