Like many other people I tried to keep the black water sensors clean, ice worked as good as any thing else but it is just short term.
Black water has never been a problem because the gray water needs dumping first.
How do you know when the gray water is full? Look in the bath tub.
We have not bleached our water in over a year, mainly because the TT does not set long between trips and we drain after each trip and refill before each trip. In the winter it is filled with antifreeze.
That does not mean bleaching is a bad idea, though it can be pain with the hot water heater.
The only way I have found to keep the hot water from smelling funky is to turn it on about a half hour before using it and turning it off until need again to keep the water heater from reheating it over and over.
