Mar 02, 2017Like Terryallen, we came from a tent camping background. All of our gear used fit in a little 4'x4' or 4'x8' trailer that was towed behind a car. These days we still have the tent camping mentality when packing, but our "tent" is much larger and heavier lol. We bring what we need and not a whole lot more than that. We are literally at 550 lbs of gear for everything on a typical trip.
When dry camping, especially in remote places, you have to bring everything with you. Things like a full load of water, generator, extra fuel, etc. You have to be a lot more prepared than normal and the weight adds up pretty quickly. If you're going to dry camp you can quickly sail past 1,000 lbs of stuff.
If I had to guess, I would say that the typical weekender would be around 800-1,200 lbs. It's a good idea to go through the trailer each year and evaluate what you're carrying with you and if you really need it. I would guess the typical weekend camper could easily save at least a couple hundred lbs by removing stuff that they don't use.
