U Lounge?

100% RV/TT rookie. Looking at bunkhouse models and really like the Open Range Light "U Lounge". Anyone else familiar with any other manufactures with this style of "U Lounge" layout? http://www.openrangerv.com/light/travel-trailer-floorplans.php
Thanks in advance.
  • I see them more and more. Usually it's a dinette and a couch in the slide. I like the idea of a huge u shaped dinette though.

The Aerolite 250kbhs comes to mind as it has a huge u shaped dinette. Also the Shadow cruiser 260 was available with a similar dinette.

In 5th wheels Outback makes a bunkhouse with that dinette style.

If you're looking smaller, a nice TT is the Passport 2400bh. It's a smaller u shaped dinette, but still a nice unit, especially with the upgrade grey fiberglass exterior.
  • I like that too. Forest River Surveyor has one and a prior year's model SV305 too. Those Surveyor and Open range are the only ones with 12' U-dinettes.
  • I had a dinette in my Starcraft. Even though physically bigger than traditional dinette, it was more cramped because the corner seating took room from from bench seats and leg room was very cramped. They are more comfortable though.
  • Speed and Mike, you are not reading well. The OP is asking about what effectively replaces many dinette/sofas on a slide with a single giant u-dinette, 12' long, not 6-7' very common but not pratical u-dinettes. See these examples:

  • For some reason many bunkhouse models are available with the U-shaped dinette. Many manufacturers have then available in bunkhouse floor plans.

While they can accommodate more seats for a larger family, they are not for everyone. Best to play house in one for a week end if you can. Or at least sit in one for a few hours and pretend you are watching TV for the evening.

The reason I say that is that I also thought they looked really great. But after spending time in one, I changed my mind. Fine for a short sit. But beyond that...not so much.
  • All the examples I posted (besides the 2400bh which is mentioned was smaller) have a U shaped lounge/dinette exactly as the ones you posted.
  • I think it is very attractive, but not sure about comfort or effectiveness. You typically see these "U Lounges" as noted by APT in a 5th wheel toyhauler.

In our Jayco Jay Flight 32 BHDS, we have a "U shaped dinette", not lounge in the slide out and it great with kids. Our daughters, their cousins, friends hang out with coloring books, dolls, etc.

Next to the "U shaped dinette" we have a sofa in the same slide out.
  • Open Range was the first place I saw the big U lounge / dinette. Getting rid of the separate couch for one big unit.

A key part of that type layout is removable tables that can be setup and take down fairly quickly.

Not wasting space on a dinette to give more lounge space.

The Open Range units I've seen have a bed in the center which folds out. So you no longer have a sleeping option of the dinette for small children and a jackknife sofa for larger kids. Just one double or queen size bed.

Better for adults, not better for several small kids.

Open Range puts them in the bunkhouse models because they don't expect the customers to need the small kids sleeping options with the bunks in back.

As far as comfort. They are better than a jackknife sofa, and most regular sofas with an air mattress fold out. You can lie back and stretch out because of their length.

Personally I prefer recliners and a stand alone table with chairs, but that's not an option due to limited space in those models. The bunkhouse model trades a lot of living room / kitchen space for the bunk room.

In my opinion one big U which can be a lounge or can be a dinette is a better choice than a small dinette and a small couch.
  • Thanks for all of the tips. As some have noted, I'm not looking for ones with a dinette/sofa, but the larger lounge area (which I think will be very popular in future models, but is some what rare today). So some of the specific models listed will be very helpful in my search. :)
