I really don't care if it pays me back or not. I bought a diesel over a gaser for pulling power, more capabiltes, and range when towing. Just like anyone here would gladly pay extra for a V8 gas engine in a half ton even though they know it costs more in fuel than a base model V6. Whether the upcharge for the engine upgrade is worth it depends on the person buying the vehicle and their needs.
Another thing that is funny that some would wine about the $8,000 upcharge for a diesel option like it's a big deal yet they will spend $8,000 in other options like leather or a nav system. How can someone talk about how expensive the diesel option is, but gladly pay the same amount for other options? That does not make sense if you were even considering a diesel. All that means is that luxury options were more important to you than the diesel option. Nothing more.
The only diesel truck that I do not get paying more for is the Ecodiesel. In the 3/4 and 1 tons, you pay more for the diesel to get more power, more capability, and better fuel economy. However with a the Ecodiesel you pay more for less power, less capabilties, but better fuel economy. To me that just doesn't make sense in a truck. Maybe for a car, but not a truck.
