Infield at a track is nothing that I would want to do today. Back in the Grand Prix and Can-AM years I worked for Facility Services at the Glen,picking up trash. We could not work during the actual race due to the possibility of blowing debris. Having a full access pass was amazing, went every place met a lot of drivers and crews.
Of course back in the seventies security was close to non existent.
Anyone remember the Bog? more than one Uhaul truck met its demise there!

Some understand auto racing and others don't. To those that do, the infield experience is a must! Nothing like "feeling" the sound of highly tuned, race engines! I'm a bit of a fan - Daytona (multiple times), Pocono (multiple), Watkins Glen (multiple), Charlotte (multiple), Michigan, Bristol, Martinsville, and Las Vegas. Was fortunate enough to experience the full hospitality treatment at Michigan with the sponsor of Ryan Newman's car (back then it was Jeff Burton driving). That to is an experience. I was really impressed with Jeff Burton, just a few hours before the race and he was willing to talk for a few minutes with each of us. Very personable! To those that understand auto racing - it's an experience! To those that don't...

While I do some day want to go to a race, we use to have a place like this. Under some pines right by a small river. Then the rancher sold the property to some corperate types out of NYC who promptly fenced off this position. The funny thing is it is not a good spot to ranch on as it is just a small strip of land just off the State road. The county accessor said they had hundreds upon hundreds of calls why this little area was fenced off. That was 20 years ago. The spot still sits fenced off an dun used. What a shame.

My take--
LOVE camping at the track.. Richmond by far is our favorite , as we hit both races a year....And as the fort goes.... We have been going almost every year for the past 25... It really is a nice place to vacation...

Sorry about the delay in responding--for a retired guy, the charter business is running my wheels off. I have been in the stands at Kansas Speedway a couple of times (ticket provided by client) in the early years of the track. As ticket prices increased, I found myself at least once each season parked in the "bus ghetto", a gravel lot far removed from the track. That's what I was expecting this time as well. I was running under a limo operator--client was the sponsor of 31 car. Parked the two coaches in the infield adjacent to their killer hospitality suite--a semi folded out to a covered party deck, with a second level observation deck. Ryan Newman and the crew chief came out and did a Q&A with the group. Great food, perfect viewing venue. Free to roam the fence from behind pit row to turn one. A fellow driver always transports the pit teams for three cars. She escorted me into pit row during the race. Arms length from the crew during freaky fast tire changes and refueling. Those tires (not China Bombs) are really warm when they come off. Bottom line, if you are a NASCAR fan and have the opportunity (and wherewithal) to experience a race from the infield, by al means, jump on it.

One of the biggest perks of staying at a Disney 'property' when visiting the Parks is that you get free use of Disney transportation. I know this may not sound like a big deal but it is - trust me. We would do a park for most of a day, then come back and grab swim gear, hop on the bus and go try out a pool or a hot tub at one of the other resort hotels. Then go back, change, and head back to The World till it closed. Come back to the camper, maybe go to the 24-hour pool for a while and then back to the camper to crash. Get up the next day and do it all over again. It was great.

My suggestion is to get one of the good guide books and read it (I'm sure somebody here can recommend the best ones). There is really nothing like The World. I believe it's 45 square miles, maybe more now. It's kind of important to learn some of the little secrets that will make your stay more enjoyable.

Light years better!

You've got your own seat, your own bathroom, beers aren't $8 a pop, hopefully you've got your fam/friends, plus you are generally closer to the track. No waiting in lines to arrive or leave, climate control if needed, don't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to the track.....I'm sure I could think of more.

No comparison. Infield is so much better.
So little story....
Parked infield at PIR in the early 90s. Outside in the am drinking a cup of coffee and up pulls a flying Ford Taurus. Goes to parallel park, since it was a busy area where the boys parked for the am pre race drivers meeting. The Ford Taurus goes to back in between two cars and rams back into a pedestrian car. Bent the hood, and smashed the bumper. Out of the Ford pops Mark Martin, to see the other car owner sitting scratching his head looking at his smashed car.
Mark grabs a sharpie out of his pocket, says sorry man, signs the guys hood and hands him a wad of cash. Don't think the other guy got a word to Mark before he went running off to the meeting.
Now those were the great OLD days of real Nascar!
