Honestly, I'd be looking at a used unit. Do you have any friends that are knowledgeable about campers? Have them come along in your search.
You can get a very nice unit around five years old for probably half the money you are talking about on a new unit. In fact, that's what I have in the unit in my signature. It was five years old when I got it, and had been used literally 6 nights. Still smelled new inside.
If you are patient, you will find a good one. Craigslist is a gold mine. Won't be as easy to find one now, but when fall hits, they will start popping up pretty fast, and late winter/early spring is the "silly season" for campers to show up for sale. They will come and go on craigslist in droves.
