UPDATE - Diesel Exhaust

Can diesel exhaust kill you like gasoline exhaust does?

I found this with a Google Search:

"Is carbon monoxide a problem with diesel engines? Usually not, although any engine, including diesel, produces CO when combustion is incomplete. Diesel (compression ignition) engines run with an excess of air and often produce less than 1200 ppm CO. When diesel fuel is burned incompletely or when overloaded and over-fueled (rich mixture), diesel engines will produce high concentrations of CO. Diesels usually pollute the air with particulates and nitrogen oxides, not CO."

  • Our is this just EPA regulating us to death?
Maybe but the first time I was in LA the smog was extremely bad.

Car regulations have improved pollution and as a result other pollution has become more of a factor. Hence diesels and lately coal generating plants.

I'm not one to defend the EPA as I think they have overstepped with some controls and it's certainly cost each of us $$.

Ummmmmmmm.........This is a VERY Odd question....???????????

SIMULAR to "Can a Shotgun Kill you, Like a Pistol can"......???????

Answer is YES........ if you Breathe in ANYTHING..BESIDES OXYGEN...it will lower the BLOODSTREAM o2 content.....that Can lead to death.

Unless you are asking,if it FALLS ON YOU......???????

In which case, the DIESEL Will kill you Faster than a Gas Engine, because it weighs more...and would have more chance of Crushing you.

Not sure if this answeres your Question....as your Question,is not really SPECIFIC...????????........:h
  • I'm very curious why you ask this question. Are you safe? Are you okay?
  • Yes, but the diesel exhaust normally has enough other by-products in it, that you will object to the smell while breathing it in.

In other words, most cars that produce CO (before the catalytic converter warms up) the exhaust might not smell bad, while a diesel will smell bad and naturally you might move to someplace with cleaner air. Also I think the percentage of CO in diesel exhaust is generally lower than it is in car exhaust (talking about pre-catalytic converter vehicles).

Modern vehicles barely produce any CO once the catalytic converter is warm. That said, my buddy was testing his furnace with a CO meter. Then wanted to know if the CO meter worked, so took it out to the garage and started his Corvette. Even with the garage door open, the CO meter went up into the 100's PPM in less than 1 minute.

  • I was in the farm equipment business for 17 years back in the 70s and into the 80s. At that time we would crank up a tractor we were working on, If it was cold outside the doors were closed and the the shop would turn almost black. I also rode old tractors back in the 60s with diesel smoke blowing in my face all day long. Never made me sick. I had allergies but this did not bother me. Do I recommend this? NO. Still I have problems with all the regulations on diesel. Diesel fuel was way under gasoline prices, but today with all the regulations, its higher. We were always told diesel exhaust is safe, and all of a sudden it is dangerous. Did they not know what they were doing back 30 years ago? I don't know. Our is this just EPA regulating us to death?
