Update: first tow with 2009 GMC 6.0

Hey guys,

Updated the 2002 1500HD to a 2009 Sierra 2500HD 4x4 SLT a week ago. Got the new and improved GM 6.0 with 6 speed. Towed my normal camper down to St Pete for the week and wanted to report back a few observations, taking the same roads that I took before with the old truck. First off, if anybody has questioned about buying the newer 6.0, then go for it. I was amazed that the truck pulled this good. GM should have put this combo in the 2001- up trucks to start. With VVT, cam in block and high flow L92 heads this thing has found some missing lower end torque. From the start, it pulled so much easier down the road.

MPGs in 02 truck with 6.0, 2 wheel drive, and 3.73 gears with 4L80e
Empty- 11 city, 12-13.5 hwy
Loaded with same camper- 7.5 highway

2009 6.0 4x4 crew cab, 3.73 gear, 6l90e
Empty- 13.5-15.0 and even saw 21.5 at 45 mph and cruise... Also got 16mph cruise hwy at 70mph.
Loaded with same camper- 8.5-9.0

Overall I am very happy with the truck. I really liked the older 6.0 a lot. Despite pulling with a DMax and Cummins prior I choose to stay with the gas. My thought is that if anybody has thought about trading up to the newer 6.0 then go for it. The truck pulled in 5th most of the time here in Florida. GM has really woke this engine up with the upgrades, and well the 6 speeds is awesome in my book. This is my experience only guys, just wanted to pass it along. I was thinking that the newer 2015 version of this truck is going to be impressive and was holding out for one. But money wise, this one fell into my payment range and has impressed me. I will keep this one around for another 10 plus years. Oh yea forgot to post pics....working on them... It's the slate grey (blue) color......my favorite.

  • Good to hear!

The 6 spd has also been a great addition in the 1500 lineup. My '10 Suburban 1500 tows much better than my '05 did. Performance is much improved when not towing as well -- a couple mpg better on the freeway, and the truck is never caught flat-footed like the old one was on occasion.

Congrat's on yer new pull dog. I'd like to see GM stuff something like an 8.1 big block V-8 in the 3/4 and 1 ton gasers. Wouldn't THAT be a hoot!!!

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)

Ummm. They did for many years... Where have you been?

Thanks guys, ls1 mike were you able to upgrade the cam on your 6.0?

Nope to much running and camping. Maybe September. I would really like the six speed, just can't justify getting rid of truck with 33,000 miles on it that gets used about 3000 miles a years.

  • I would trade up again, just to get the six speed transmission. I have had 2007, 2009, and now 2013 2500HD's and the biggest improvement was from the 07 (old style) to the 09, which got me the six speed. Lots of people report 10% better fuel mileage than I get. They might be using the computer? I don't.
  • I agree with your findings. The 6-spd trans really helps the 6.0L. I love mine. It tows my (relatively light) TT at 65-75mph getting 8-10mpg, mostly in 5th gear. Unloaded, we are getting about 14mpg mixed driving. 250 mile day trip excursion last weekend showed 20mpg @ 65mph. Not bad for 7200 pounds of truck and stuff.
