Well, I like to learn stuff, and pass it along so someone else can use it too. Not to mention I just saved like $800. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me for a mechanic to not do his own work (within practical limits, of course).
Realistically, I would consider this a moderate skill requirement job. The average person could do this, but I can tell you it verges on a young man's job. Being 52 and in decent shape, I can guarantee I'll be sore tomorrow. Being bent over under a hood all day takes it out of you, no matter what the age.
