I do not a vehicle with spark plugs and I am a gear head of the 60's.
Can someone explain, briefly, why these plugs are such as issue? Corrosion? Access? Is this just Ford issue? What engine sizes does it affect?
In my day boys,(Yes, here it comes: another old timer story) it was not unusual for us gear heads to change plugs on a V-8 in 1/2 hour and do it every 15,000 miles. Of course, I understand that back then the engines had to have fresh plugs due to inefficiency of combustion when compared to modern engines.
Me too...since my teens in the early 60's have been a gear head, wrench
and boy racer
The pic's of the plug and the link to AGCO are good and telling...
Designer by training and early career...I'd not have signed off on any
of these designs when I was an engineering manager.
Both the Ford head design and spark plug. Both El Cheapo path against
the old adage..."Penny wise, pound foolish" and can see where they
went during their CDR's
Later career as a scientist at SunLabs (assigned there, became a working
scientist after CTO found me out among the MBAs) and the other physicists
and I coined the summer interns 'Red/Green light designers'
Whizzes on the computer designing whatever. Even faster on the simulations
and when the simulation came back with a 'green light'...they were done
If the simulation came back with vectors (red light)...they's fix
them and think done...
Does anyone think they went back to the CAD program and taught or
wrote software to factor in crevices and cubby holes that will fill
with deposits? I'd bet a Costco Dog Lunch that they didn't, nor did
they care to
Different groups and the design group off to their next assignment.
While service deals with this issue. Only will they get the designers
back involved if there is a major recall or maimings/deaths...
Lost if the 'feel' for it and why lamented about these designs. Wacky
and getting more so over time. They believe 100% what the computer CAD
programs say or calculate. Garbage in, garbage out...
