We made the switch and truthfully wish that we hadn't. We are out door campers and only used the trailer to sleep in. The tent trailer was easier to tow, really roomy when you put it up, and we loved the open feeling and fresh air that a tent trailer provides. My youngest son and I took a 6 week trip to Alaska in the tent trailer and, although it rained almost every night, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
We "upgraded" to a decent brand of trailer, Bigfoot, and it was more much expensive, required more maintenance (the more you have the more that can go wrong) especially cleaning off the bugs after a long trip, a larger tow vehicle, needed a larger storage area, and cut our tow vehicle MPG.
It really depends on what type of camping experience you enjoy. A tent trailer works best for people who don't want to tie up a large amount of money in their tow vehicle and RV plus they prefer ( or are willing to accept) a more basic comfort level.
