Upgrades and mishaps

Just got my travel trailer out of storage. It is 9,000 lbs dry 35' floorplan. I tow with a V-10 Ford Excursion. Over the last down season I've installed a SPD Y pipe, new front brakes and a Hellwig rear sway bar. Already have 1 ton rear leaf springs (sits like it's jacked up when not loaded). Still saddled with 3.73 gears, but it tows really well in 3rd and hardly ever needs 2nd. And I like getting 16-17 mpg unloaded on a straight shot interstate run.

Anyway, I live about an hour from the storage facility and wouldn't you know it I forgot my 1" bar for my BlueOx WD setup. Also, I forgot to air up my tires. To make a long story short, the 1 hour drive home was the scariest drive I've ever taken while towing my camper. I was able to muscle my chains up to 6 links without the wrench, but I usually go 9 or 10. Talk about porpoising. I think the shank of the hitch ground out on the highway a few times. Not fun.found out after I got home that my tires were only at 50 psi and I run them at 65 when towing.

Unit is sitting peacefully on it's site now. Guess I'll have to wait until next time to see if the new mods have made any difference.
  • No offense taken. Yes, I jacked it up until the rear wheels of the truck were barely touching the ground. Only way I could move the tensioners. The lie-o-meter says I get 17.5 mpg and I hand figured it a few times on long interstate trips and it was 16.0-16.5. Only on pure interstate trips, no stopping, steady 70-75 mph for 5-7 hours. Stopping in towns and state roads don't see that high. Normally 14.0 or so.
  • 16-17?! That’s a lot. Best I could do with mine was 15.2 when I had the 3.73’s. Now with the 4.30’s I’m about 14.3.
Yes, use the tongue jack to raise the trailer to put the cabins on. I do it all the time. No need to use the bar.
  • I meant no offence to you with my post Hemling. Just asking.
  • 16-17mpg unloaded!! Dang thats good. I never get that in my 8.1. 13.5 is what i average but its mostly back roads and hills.
  • Did you use your tongue jack to help tighten the links.
