purchased a ipad 2 wi fi only to use navigation apps on the road.it is useless because if doesn't have a gps. Live and learn

Yup. A GPS is really the item to buy for navigation. IMHO the way to go. It speaks the directions for you, so you don't have to keep taking your eyes of the road to look down at an iPad! Plus what happens when you are not around a wifi signal. :S

Also, GPS systems are usually much cheaper than an ipad. I purchased a Garmin three years ago and it came with life time map updates. I've seen them advertised for under a hundred dollars.

you need one with a 3G connection... or you need you use your smart phone as a hot spot.... I bought a second Ipad just for the 3g....Mike C. But they do make GPS Doggles for the wifi only models... I think Bad Elf is one company... my buddy used it in his airplane....Mike C.

the problem with ipad or a smartphone for a gps is it works if you have a signal from a cell tower if your out of cell range your gps is no good. always better to get a dedicated gps system. smartphone,ipad gps are ok in the city get out in the wilderness forget it.
