As long as Ford (or the other brands as well), put the gas motors in the 3/4 & 1 tons, there will be people that pull heavy with them. That's what they're for right. Well yes, they are, chassis wise, and some will load it up based on what a salesman tells them, and in their defense, the tow ratings may even allow it. In reality though, you have to know what gas powered 385 HP will do with the given gears/trans you choose. If you know that, you know what to expect performance, AND mileage wise. I choose the truck in my sig based on towing a 7K lb TT and am very happy so far. If I planned on any more weight I would have ponied up for a diesel.
As to the original question. Up to 10K trailer weight, either the V10/410's or the 6.2/4:30's will do well up to 10K trailer weight. Slight edge in toque to the V10. But expect to pay at the pump. I clocked 9.5 MPG's on two trips so far, but haven't pulled any mountain passes, and haven't even got 2,000 miles on the odometer yet.
