Valve seals

I know the valve seals on the dump valves are some type of rubber. What does anyone do to lube them to keep them from drying and cracking? That is if anyone does anything.

  • If im not mistaken most of the deodorizers have a conditioner in them. when you flush your tanks and add deodorizer for storage it keeps them from drying out,
  • Thetford sells a plumbing seal lubricant product for the dump valves. Thing is, just how is it supposed to work when it just "passes" through with the waste?

I bought a bottle of it when I stored the trailer after a trip and had run out of the toilet seal lubricant/conditioner; figured it was better than nothing for the toilet valve. That's the only plumbing "valve" I really pay attention to.

    Nothing.

While there may be some product sold stating that they lubricate and or extend the life of the seals they are all a waste of money.

These valves ARE replaceable as an assembly, they are bolted to the plumbing pipes. Typically you should have no problem getting 20 yrs or more out of them provided you don't close them with debris like TP not fully flushed out. If I remember correctly black tank valve was no more than $20 and the smaller valve perhaps $15.

Heck I changed out the ORIGINAL valves when I bough my current TT which was built in the early 80's and I bought it 7 yrs ago.

Go camping and don't worry about the valves.
  • I have only had to replace them once. On my first TT, a 1975 Prowler that I bought around 93-94...They started leaking a year or two later.
An easy job, and the parts are cheap.
My next TT was purchased new in 2001. 10 years of use and the seals were fine.

I don't do anything to them. Doubt that there is anything that would extend the life enough to justify the cost/effort.
