Mike,
"We left Saturday, May 31st, 2003 in our 240 square foot camper. We traveled north to Port Angeles, WA; taking the ferry to Victoria BC, traveling up the east coast of Vancourver Island and pulling into camp below Campbell River, BC. We worked our scenic way north to Port Hardy near the northeast end of the Island to meet the Queen of Prince Rupert Ferry. The crossing to Prince Rupert took 16 hours weaving through the Inland Passage. This route saved us two or three long days of driving overland. We drove the TC off of the ferry and on east to meet with the junction of the Cassier Highway in BC. One third of this route was still unpaved gravel and dirt. We began to see black bear and moose. Moving north to clean-and-neat Stewart BC, we crossed the street to Hyder, AK, a kind of shanty town with lots of left-over hippies. Re-crossing the street back to Steward we had to go through Canadian Customs even though we had only been in Hyder for five or ten minutes and 200 feet. Even that was too long. We took a dirt road to the Stikine River Valley. "
There are many very nice campgrounds north of Victoria.
For the ferry at Port Angeles, we had to show up extra early to get a ticket (to ride!), went to local bank to get $Canadien, get in the cue, and have a leisurely lunch in "the box".
We were supposed to meet the Whaz and Mrs. Whaz on this trip as we were headed in the same direction, more or less together, but our cell phones cut out in Victoria and we could not find them. After looking at Whaz' report above again, I thought something looked vaguely familiar. Compare this pic with Whaz' above:
