Photobucket makes ZERO off of me.
Read my post again. Photobucket has made plenty of money off of you and millions of others. Another example, Facebook made roughly $20 off of each user in the last quarter alone which totaled to $8 billion. How do they do this? Users spend time creating post, sharing pictures, playing games, etc. Users do these things while viewing ads and utilizing sponsored content. When posts and pictures are shared with the outside world, even more people are drawn into the system, which makes more money. This is how these services can offer you access free of charge, but in actuality they are not free at all. There's a lot of money tied up in hardware, bandwidth, and data centers. When a user decides to leave, boycott the service, or significantly reduce their use then those dollars leave with them. Remember MySpace and GeoCities?
There's no such thing as a free lunch. While no money has left your hands to use the service, the service is still making money off of you which pays their bills and makes a profit. The little gear often doesn't realize the larger machine that it's part of.
