It's pretty fascinating to watch this infrastructure develop. The obvious end game is universal fast charging- for EVs to truly replace ICE cars you need to be able to take any brand EV to any charging station and charge it fast. Imagine how ridiculous it would be if you could only gas up your Ford truck quickly at gas stations that were in Ford's fueling network. I realize EV owners will do most charging at home but there needs to be good options for long road trips. I would bet they will have this sorted out in the next five years or so.
I hear ya. But it won't be 5 years. In europe its right now, and in North America it will be more like a year for broad coverage and is pretty much already there for Tesla.
Technically a Tesla is universal in the sense that it can charge at Superchargers and Chademo sites. Pretty much everywhere there are CCS handles at their stations than Chademo handles. It’s just that the VW charger chain (Electrify America) usually has more CCS than Chademo stations. All the other chains like ChargePoint and EVgo or FLO all have equal number of CCS and Chademo “pumps”. Non Tesla EV’s like Nissan Leafs, Chevy Bolts, Jaguar, Porsche etc will probably never have access to the Supercharger network as they haven’t paid a dime into it. It is a private network. We have a Chademo adapter for our Tesla and it is a very handy thing to keep in the Frunk. A little bulky and the charge times are quite a bit slower than Superchargers but handy nonetheless.
Here is a picture of the adapter on our car. Adds an extra 10 seconds to the hookup but having access to the public network rocks.
This is a picture of a commonly found dual station with CCS and Chademo. Covers all EV's including Tesla.
This a typical Supercharger, this is Harris ranch in California. This is kinda cool becasue they have three or four set up for vehicles pulling a trailer. Drive in, Back out. Unfortunatley only for Teslas.
Some companies like Shell are even including a slow AC charger, which is kind of annoying as it ties up a station for hours. Not sure what they were thinking there.
But thankfully most are just Chademo and CCS.
