We have hauled 3 different TCs with Chevy 2500HD 6.0L pickups. Our latest probably weighs in at 3500+# when fully loaded for vacation. Never any problems.
One piece of advice though. Two of our trucks had the 4 speed auto trans, and driving in hilly/mountain terrain they would frequently downshift from 3rd to 2nd. That was pretty noisy and after a longer trip, tiring.
Our latest has a 6 speed auto and it makes for a much more relaxing, smooth and quiet ride.
Unfortunately there are no GM engines larger than the 6.0, unless you happen to find a used but good condition 8.1L Chevy/GMC. Now that was a powerplant.
