When I finished High School I got a 1968 VW Bug. It transported me back and forth to college from home and to work for 4 years. At the end of the 4th year ... let's see if I remember ...
1 headlight (the other was broken out by a stone truck dropping a rock)
2 4 balding tires that amazingly never blew
3 A front fender held on by a coat hanger
4 The rear bumper was crushed from my neglect to leave it in gear and it rolled down a hill and slammed into a light pole. Didn't hurt the motor.
5 It had a gas add-on heater installed in the passenger area. It blew fantastic heat, but also blew the smoke back into the passenger area.
6 The radio quit working
7 I had no spare tire any more.
8 It had no brakes as the master cylinder was shot and I had to pump brakes to get it to stop.
9 I had it repainted shortly before the light pole incident, and after the incident, paint started flaking off.
10 I sold it for $500!
It was a great car! But it was the ONLY car I ever owned that was not GM!
I'll keep my 3500 dualy diesel. Sorry VW, you are now just a great memory. Like the time I actually, successfully drove you up a snow mountain where the city piled snow from the road and parking lots. yea, I actually climbed to the top with that car. You're a good memory and I'll just keep it that way.
Oh and did I mention that VW was a straight stick and I drove it 6 weeks with a broken left foot (in the arch) cast and crutches and all ... back and forth to school that year!
