VW/Audi

This is going to hurt the bottom line a bit! So wonder how the fix will affect their fuel mileage and used car prices?

The Environmental Protection Agency and California issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to Volkswagen Friday over a device in certain models that allows vehicles to emit pollutants without detection during normal operation, according to a statement released by the EPA.
The so-called “defeat device,” found in 2009-2015 model Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars, uses sophisticated software that turns on full emissions controls only during official lab tests but then turns them down during normal driving. As a result, the cars release nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the federal standard, according to agency.

    I don't own one, but I agree. This may be one recall every owner should avoid. I suspect those in California will have no option with the strict regs. I will still like to hear what VW has to say.

    I had a Jetta TDi but way before any emission garbage. The issue is VW had a program that could somehow detect if the car was in an emission test and then adjust the emission calibration so it would pass the test. Then it would recalibrate to a lower setting that would have caused it to fail the test.

    So that's why they don't have all the emissions problems that many HD truck owners post about. It's because they're not on half the time :D ! I kid I kid I kid. Sadly, car sales rules across the nation now require all recalls to be addressed on a vehicle before it can be re-sold. So eventually, all these cars will have the recalls done.

    ****. Love my Jetta TDI! Last week ran 800 miles one day for parts. On interstate, set cruise at 82. Averaged 38.9 mpg! Now, if recalled, will probably get 28.9!

    And, they will say that is good!

    Do you have Diesel emissions testing in BC? Around here in Ontario it's just look for smoke in the exhaust, or so I'm told. But the gassers get the full treatment if you live in an urban area. We don't have to worry about it in rural areas. Imagine in California it's more rigorous.

    Me, I don't mind the regs at all, having spent some time in European cities before they started cutting emissions. And after seeing on the TV how bad it can get in Chinese cities.

    I blame the EPA, not VW. Even if they did have trick software.

    If the EPA has not tested the actual tailpipe emissions of ANY of these vehicles over this entire span of years to find such a discrepancy....SHAME ON THEM. No one is at fault but the EPA for not enforcing ACTUAL emission specifications.

    Software should have no bearing on EPA actual tailpipe and dyno testing. They should have their noses in every orifice...NOT every electronic plug. Let's get real EPA.
