I notice that the verticle deviders angle out in what appears to be a few inches over the bed. Why?
I think what you are seeing is an optical illusion in the photos… what's actually happening is that the bottom of the dividers are angled
IN. This allows for a 52" long slot along the floor of the cabover (and separated from the bed by the bottom rail of the cabinet face) for stowing long-skinny items; e.g. umbrellas, kites, fishing poles, etc…
If you look closely you will also notice that there are openings in the dividers above the top shelf. These allow the neck of a guitar and/or ukelele to pass through.
Did you consider just changing the queen size mattress to a full size mattress?
Nope, I can't imagine having a smaller mattress. The shelves do not reduce/encroach into the sleeping area at all. Also, it's not uncommon for one (or both) of the kids to crawl up into the bed in the morning for a snuggle… If the mattress were smaller, I'd probably be the first one kicked out of the bed ;)
Beautiful workmanship
Thanks Chet!
we couldn't give up our windows
I completely understand… we love the giant windows with jalousies in the kitchen & dinette area. However this
one window in the cabover is a tiny little slider that has almost always been covered with Reflectix. Anyway, with the shelves in place the window is still operable and if we ever do feel the need to look out of it we can simply move the stack of t-shirts out of the way.
Cheers
