9 years of living just south of Astoria, OR and without question, my most memorable and single favorite place to visit was the John Day Fossil Beds National Park area. Get reservations, there are only 6 RV sites, at the Fish House Inn in Dayville, near John Day. From there you can visit:
1. The Painted Hills unit for unbelievable natural sights and virtually no one around during the summer, non-holiday, weeks.
2. Travel north to the high school, leave a small donation and dig for fossils
3. Stop at the many fruit orchards and pick your own, highly advise Rainier Cherries and then make your own ice cream back at the RV.
4. Visit the two other John Day Fossil Beds National Park Units
That was an extremely relaxing and amazing OR trip. Of course, no trip to the northwest would be complete without visiting the coastline. Just hope for light winds and marine layer that burns off.
