If you drive up the Columbia Gorge east from Portland you get to see a huge river gorge with several waterfalls. The "water falls" are actually hanging creeks because the lower portion of their steam paths was cut away during the ice age.
If you come across highway 2 or the north Cascades loop, you get to enjoy some awesome scenery, keep driving over to the Grand Coulee Dam then head south along Banks lake to enjoy the "grand coulee", it rivals any massive river canyon on earth. At the end is Dry Falls, an awesome little stop with a dry 11 mile wide river falls. There is very nice camping and fishing at Dry Falls and Steamboat Rock campgrounds, USFS or state run I forget.
The middle of Washington state is missed far to often, it is pretty cool.
