Waste water solution help

My Amerigo has a small wet bath. I'm sure the toilet needs some repair. It also hogs most all of the floor space in shower. It doesn't have a gray tank only black. Should I get a porta potty and cover the shower floor toilet hole then convert black tank to gray, or repair toilet and use a portable tote for gray water, possibly mounted on a hitch rack below the camper?
Pros and cons to each please?? I kind of favor the portable toilet idea for gained shower space and less extra stuff to carry on rack. Porta potty can be stored and used in bathroom but removed for shower time. Maybe im missing something? Probably about same money either way.
Thanks!
Eric

  • I just replied to that one. I couldn't justify that much for a toilet. We aren't gonna be spending a ton of time in the camper unfortunately.
  • hey BigBlue12, check out the post I just added about the interesting toilet.
It might save you a ton of work if you want to go that route.

    Good luck
  • We have a Theford Curve porta potty for our TC. It's 5 gallons. I had a camper just like you and now that I have used the Curve for one season, I'd make the black tank into grey and use a porta potty. Plus the Curve has hold down brackets...

I have small TC and the black tank was only 5 gallons anyway. So the porta potty route is great. Plus, no stinky slinky's to carry. just swing out the spout on the porta potty and dump.

We like to travel fast and stop overnight in rest areas so having a gray tank would be nice. Right now we have to attach a portable Swiss water bag when we stop.

We do the same thing you want to - remove the porta potty when we shower. Works great.
  • Portable gray water totes are pretty flexible for their use and come in many sizes. I have one when we dry dry camp because I carry an additional 84 gallons of fresh water in the enclosed trailer I will transfer to the TC when its tank gets low. We try to shower outside to limit gray water storage, but when full I will dump the gray tank into a tote so we can continue camping without having to find a dump station. Our tote has a hitch accessory that allows it to be pulled behind the TC - I would not suggest this if you are going over rough terrain or any extended distance, but it would work well in a campground. I will roll mine into the enclosed trailer and secure it until we get to a dump station.

BTW: I would rather deal with a portable gray water tote than black water...

Eric on page 6 of the 1972 Amerigo rebuild thread are pics I posted of the 2 new tanks I installed in my 71 Amerigo. The toilet that is in there now holds the tank to the floor with a screw flange.
I installed an outside shower for those that don,t like the tite space in the bathroom.

I have a 1969 Avion camper with a wet bath. Like your camper, the wet bath is small. I too set my camper up with an outside shower. I put a "Tee" and quick disconnect LP fitting to hook up an outside water heater. My camper is on a trailer so I used my trailer water tank and pump for the outside shower. It works great.
As far as a gray water tank, I had one custom built for my Avion. It had the room underneath the back to install it.
  • Bob, thanks for the info. Is the toilet flange and nut a structural thing for the tank or is that just to secure the toilet to the tank? I can remove toilet from inside the camper without dissecting tank correct? I'll have to look when I get home I guess.... Wasn't paying much attention but my tank appears mostly translucent color/see through but white-ish.
