Water heater by pass question

This is a shot of my water heater and the by passes on a 2014 Coachmen Freedom Express. Should there be another cut off at the top, on the hot water out pipe? I understand the cutoff for the cold water in at the bottom, and open the cut off in the middle to allow the antifreeze to go up, but what keeps the antifreeze from going into the water heater at the top?

Someone on another forum suggested that on newer models, this is a check valve/back flow piece? Another said it appears to be a cut off with the handle missing? Any ideas?
  • never seen one where the handle wasn't pre-installed. It may have just fell of from vibration. I think it may have been prudent to put some loctite on the screw that you re-installed.
  • Got a chance to look again. It was in fact a missing handle. Moved a few things around, and found the handle and screw. Seems like they would have installed the valve upright. Sure was hard to get the handle lined up and get the little screw started. Suppose that's why they threw it down and didn't install it?
  • Check valves are in nipple that is screwed into tank.

What you have is a missing valve handle. Compare it to the other 2 valve bodies...same design.

Use a pair of pliers or a small crescent wrench on that flat portion and turn it 1/4 turn to close valve (flat portion would be across line in closed position--------right now flat portion is parallel with line and valve is open)

  • If it's a missing handle the shaft that is sticking down would have a threaded hole in the center.
Try removing the handle form a different valve and see if it can slide on and turn the part in question.

    Or it's a one-way check valve

    Most likely answer.
MY rig has only one bypass valve and a check valve

easy way to find out close the valves as you winterize then if no water goes into the tank its a checkvalve it bit does go in the tank its a valve
