The electric power and DSI option on my water heater was probably the most important upgrade from my previous TT. I used to dread trying to light that water heater and then try to keep the pilot lit. Flipping a switch is so much easier!
Regarding the anode rod, my water heater only came with a plastic plug, so I wasn't sure if they changed the composition of the tanks so that a rod wasn't needed any more. I have a spare one from the last TT so I need to get it placed in there. In the past I have never had much deterioration of the anode - certainly nothing like what was shown in the photo. I think it depend on the type of water you have in your area.
