Different vehicles call for changing the fuel filter at various intervals. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation and you very rarely go wrong. There is nothing magical about 12k miles. My VW says every 40k miles. My BMW says (I think) 100k miles, although I didn't catch that and did it at 120k miles because it started leaking. Your truck maker could call for any interval.
