I opened it up and it is bone dry. The plywood under the refrigerator looks aged and based on the colour it may have gotten wet before. But the dust seems to say that it hasn't been wet in a while.
This kind of surprises me because of the damage to the vent. But unless there is some way that the water could come in the vent and be somehow diverted away from this area it doesn't seem to be the culprit in this case.
