I sanitize ours every year or so. The tank is almost always filled from a chlorinated water supply and in past 20 yrs have not had a problem. As far as the dogs drinking water supply, it is from whatever source available. I have never had a dog get sick from the water they drink. They are hunting dogs and drink some of the most foul smelling water when in the field in 3 different states and no problems.
