Like most optional equipment, 4wd will mostly pay for itself on trade-in/resale. If you do the math of up front cost of many options like higher trim packages,a more powerful engine, a diesel engine over gas in an HD, or even 4wd and calculate how much more you get on resale with these options than without, you really aren't paying that much for them in total ownership. Not only that, but it makes the vehicles much easier to sale.
