Weak Slide Out Motor

My slide out motor is having a hard time moving the slide room in when it is fully out. I have to get out and push the room while someone holds the button on for the motor. This happens while connected to my 30amp connection. My camper is 4 y/o. Do I need a new motor or lubricate the moving parts? Thanks

The 30 amp service is 120 VAC and provides power to the converter which charges the battery. The slide motor is 12 VDC and runs off the converter/battery.
  • I had a similar problem and it was the crappy indoor butt connectors between the trailer wiring and the motor wires. Corrosion there was the problem. Changed to proper outdoor crimp connectors with the gel to prevent corrosion. Slide works like new now.

  • I would first check the battery connections to make sure corrosion is not the problem. If your connections are good, take the battery to an auto parts and they will test it for free. If you still have the problem, check the connections at the motor. It's a reach, but there could be a problem there. I don't think the motor would get weak, it should work, or not work. A slow motor is a sign of not enough power.

If you still have the problem, check and lubricate the rails as mentioned above.
  • Did you have the door open to let the air out as the slide comes in? The slide is like a huge piston and the compression of the air could cause the motor to work harder. Just a thought.
  • I also would suspect low battery voltage The motor takes a lot of power. My motor home recommends the motor be running it tales that much power. Perhaps your battery is not at full charge. Might help if plugged into tow vehicle.
  • Probably the rubber wipes on the sides have hardened causing a drag when the slide retracts. You can use silicon as a lube or even baby powder.
  • Check your battery. Slides need a good battery to work even if plugged in to shore power.
