Not intending to suggest how to parent, but that is probably the WORST possible place for them to be. Suggest you get them down and keep them down. Possible damages are endless, not to mention falling.
No offence taken, I was there with my brother in law and we were watching the kids the whole time, they just wanted to check out the camper, they weren't doing anything dangerous other than sitting and bouncing, that is why I was kinda going out on a limb thinking it could have been them.
Also, now that I am thinking about it, there was one other thing that happened. When we bought the camper the guy we bought it off of opened up the awning for us. And when he was putting it back down he let go of the pull cord and the thing kinda sling shotted back into the camper pretty hard.(I didn't realize the awning was spring loaded and would do that, haha)
This was one of the last things we inspected before purchasing and after I did not go back inside to inspect anymore. I had been in the camper since and never really paid much attention to the rear bunk, so maybe that caused it? the mount for the awning is near the damage on the inside but not directly in line with it.
Either way, I am getting slightly more confident that it is not water damage, which is good, but no damage is really good.
Also, Yeknomssarb = Brassmonkey, just a name i've used on different forums for years now.
