Well here you go boys

Well on the way into work Monday the 48RE bit the big one, kinda. I knew the converter was slipping but never thought it would take out the trans. On the way in the truck would slip hard going from first to second. But it never kicked a code and only after the oil got above 150*.

Dropped the truck off at the shop Monday night they pulled the trans Tuesday ordered a 3 disc low stall converter and rebuild kit with a trans go shift kit. Picked the truck up this afternoon they showed me the clutch discs and steels. Third gear was warped discs were pitted and the TQ was full of pieces of disc.

Now I have to say I'm a bit disappointed as I have changed the fluid and filter every 30,000 miles so at 139,000 to have a TC go south is not making Don a happy camper, plus the fact that our bank account is $1,900 lighter also.

Mamma asked me "are you tiring to make a case for a new truck?". Told her nope but a new Challenger SRT8 with a manual six speed might be nice. :C All she said is maybe this spring!!!!!

    I can only wish......
  • The shop is a well known re-builder that does work for a lot of the auto shops around town. He uses Precision Torque Converters out of MD and the rebuild kit came from a local warehouse. The rebuild has a 3 year unlimited warranty and the TC has a lifetime. I couldn't let the truck be down as it's my DD so the dream of a Goerend was out the window, not to mention the cost of one of his rebuilds.

  • So what was your tranny and TQ converter of choice??? I'm pro Suncoast myself. I've ordered a custom tranny and a couple of custom TQ converters from them over the years and IMHO, there's none better.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
  • Nope no chip and I changed the fluid and filter every 36k. The shop told me the TRW TC is what took out the trans, oh well, she's built now and with the triple disc TC should be good to go.

Have to say it shifts nice now. Mamma asked me "are you tiring to make a case for a new truck?". Told her nope but a new Challenger SRT8 with a manual six speed might be nice. :C All she said is maybe this spring!!!!!

  • Don, sorry to hear your tranny etc went. They are not cheap to fix!
  • Towing does put a lot of strain on the tranny...Glad you are back on the road.
  • Have you installed a chip for more HP?

That's what did my tranny in. Twice.:(
  • But now you know you are good to go for a long time. Still cheaper than a new one and you know what you got. Worth a lot.

    Happy Camping
