What's the advantage of being in 4th with 4.10s vs 3rd in 3.42? It makes sense to me that it would matter more when you're only working with 4 speeds. It's academic to me as I'll never own a DRW truck, and 3.42s are just fine towing anything a SRW can handle.
I've only towed the "baby mountains", east of the Mississippi, some grades in WV & VA being 7%, , some secondary, curvy mountainous roads having 10+ degree climb..its RARE that I'm in 4th, gear, very rare..5th gear, if it drops down to that. I've had 3.73 in 4 D/A's I owned..I've read MANY reports on towing with 3.42's on the Cummins forum where some have traded 3.42 equipped trucks for the 3.73 or 4.10 gearing, after they've towed heavy, but believe what you want...
Im working with 6 speed auto, not 4, not 5, but 6., towing 7% grade on I77 or I64, I can pull mountains towing 16,300# in 5th gear and hitting 60-65, will go into 6th, but I gear back down to 5th...It's simple math and a BIG difference in GCWR due to the gearing...I know you didn't want to hear that, believe what you want, but too many testimonials on the Cummins forum telling the differences in towing heavy in the mountains..I an't remember having to gear down to 3rd.m, much less 4th...just my experience here in these sissy mountains east of the Mississippi...
Not knocking on the 3.42, but you and I are talking two different topics..I'm talking towing heavy in the mountains, with a lot more GCWR..I don't care if you like or dislike dually's, matters not to me..Not trying to sell anyone on them...just mentioned the gearing because I never heard if the OP was getting a SRW or a DRW..thus the reason I commented the way I did... to each his own.
