He's starting off by renting a trailer for a few weeks to figure out what he likes and doesn't like before he makes a commitment to buy something. What's the big deal?

You should know yourself it takes far more than just "a few weeks" ... if anything, the OP should put these long distance travel trailer camping plans off for a year and take this upcoming year to get out there camping locally with a smaller, simpler camper like a popup and figure out for themselves just what this sport is all about.

My gosh. You make it sound like brain surgery. If the OP goes with his plan and has some disappointments, or difficulties along the way, the only thing he is out is some $. That can be chalked up as the cost of his education. He already knows he doesn't want a popup, why steer him needlessly in that direction?
To the OP: I hope you didn't think every comment/reply was going to be helpful.
In the OP's first post he/she said - "What do you think are advantages/disadvantages to having a travel trailer versus a fifth wheel or other RV?" ... where did they say they "don't want a popup"? :h
As for being "out some $" :R - dream on, we all know just how expensive this sport is and certainly renting both a trailer and a suitable TV with which to pull it could be quite costly over the course of an entire season. My recommendation stands - buy a used popup, try it out for awhile to see what you do & don't like about the sport, and if so inclined to go further with it the following season then sell that used popup, often easy to do (as I did) for what you paid for it, and then consider investing in an appropriate trailer and a vehicle suitable for towing it. This process is not to be taken lightly as any mistakes and it can prove to be a very costly exercise. Who knows, as the OP hasn't said, but perhaps they already have a vehicle that would be suitable for towing a smaller popup, no special hitch equipment required. Amazing how so many are so willing to cavalierly spend others $$$$$$ so readily. :R Interesting also how others like you target me when I'm only agreeing with others who think the OP's plans aren't realistic, for so many reasons. You may be SpeakEasy but you certainly aren't speaking clearly about exactly what I did post. :S
