Depending where you want to go, the size of the trailer can be a limiting factor. There are questions on these forums almost daily for information about hills, mountains, curves and campsite size. Personally, I don't want an Interstate Queen and prefer the rural roads to better experience this country. Now you mentioned a 1500 truck, and that is one limiting factor. Of course you wouldn't exceed load ratings and such, just be aware that staying well below the maximum load will greatly improve the driving experience. For the folks that just drive to the local campground, they can push things to the limit.
I have over-nighted at Walmarts many times with no problems other than the occasional noisy truck and inconsiderate folks that leave shopping carts. Campgrounds are rather safe and I don't worry about leaving the trailer there, but I do not leave valuable items unsecured.
Everyone is different and what is important to one may be meaningless to you. For example; size envy, I don't care that you have three slides, one is plenty for me. Just select the unit that will do the job and know that any extra is a negative while underway.
