Basically better than a popup: Easier and faster to set up and take down, you get a bathroom, larger fridge etc...
But not as good as a full hard side: Canvas won't insulate against noise, heat or cold as well. Eventually the canvas will need replacement and that probably means the end of the trailer as it's not worth spending thousands on a 10-15yr old rig. Also, if you pack up wet, you need to dry it out (not a huge issue if you store at home but if you use a storage lot some distance from your house...)
As far as the positive of hearing the outside noise...every hard side I've come across, you can open the windows if you want to hear the birds.
Biggest reason I see to get a hybrid is if you have a marginal tow vehicle and don't want to upgrade the tow vehicle. A lot of medium size SUV's can handle a 20' hybrid but would be pushing it to move up to a 26' hard side. It's a compromise to get almost as much space.
