What do I need for this trailer?

I bought a 1997 Mallard 24' travel trailer. GAWR all axles is 2695 lbs. Can anyone give me insight as to what size truck/specs I need? I see brake discs on the wheels of the dual axle trailer. Is a 3/4 ton 4wd truck enough? I would think a tow package is warranted, bigger mirrors.

I have a 2008 Nissan Titan 2wd. It'll pull it but I figure it's not enough for long-term.

I think I do want a crew cab like my Titan. New or used, I don't really care but if I could find something low mileage, I'd prefer used, as these new ones are crazy high.

Insight into what is needed would be great!
  • Any brand of modern (2010+) half tons have capabilities for that TT. Not every half ton sold or on dealer lots can. You will want the upgraded engines, shorter rear axle, and afore mentioned heavy duty towing package from any brand.

Your current truck is probably appropriate when new. So as long as it is in good operating condition, then it should perform well. Flush all the fluids. Get a weight distributing hitch if the TT did not come with one. Learn how to adjust that. Get a proportional brake controller. Some form of wider/towing mirrors is good, and there are effective ones from $30-500.
  • Somebody said "without many details to go on," so I ask, what other details are needed?

I am surprised that my 1/2 ton might do? I would much rather use my Titan if it will work, as I as new to this and don't know yet how much I will use/pull the trailer. My Titan does not have a tow package, what will I need to do to it?

    - larger mirrors
    - brake controller?
    - sway bar / stabilizer gizmo needed?

I have 180k miles on the truck and replaced front brakes about 4 yrs ago, probably need to go ahead and do rear brakes?

Do I need to beef up suspension in some way?

    Thanks for replies!

EDIT: What is a "heavy 1/2 ton?"
  • Wild shot at this without many details to go on:

You will probably be just fine with your Titan.
2 or 4 wheel drive really doesn't matter except 4 wheel trucks have a little less payload. You will not tow in 4 wheel drive.
Yes, 250/2500 series truck would be better.

    That's a pretty small trailer.
Most any 1/2 ton with a tow package will do just fine.
  • Heavy half or three quarter ton with extended mirrors. Extended cab or crew cab with short bed.
