Well, yes, they are hills. But climbing from Denver over the first mountain (5,000 feet to 11,000 feet) with a 6-7% grade all the way is not dissimilar from climbing many of the 6,000 foot mountains/hills in the east from near sea level, save that non-turbo engines are short more power for the pull at the higher altitudes.
I just did that climb beyond Denver a couple weeks ago. Earlier this summer I climbed a 2,000 foot peak here in Virginia with a 15% grade. Either way, both are tough on the equipment.
