I've been wondering about using a Fantastic Fan (6000 model) with a thermostat and rain sensor. If it starts raining, it has a rain sensor and will close the lid. Similar when the temperature gets cool at night.
One idea I might try is to place a wooden box with fine air filters on four sides over the fan. Then run the fan in reverse, sucking air from the top. That way, there is positive pressure in the rig, and that should keep out sand and dust.
