This thread was talking about a particularly large fiver. Any 2K plus pin weight is going to put tremendous stress on the semi float rear axle of the HD. Again, you may be OK with this, but not me.
I'm not talking about what you or I are "comfortable" with. The truck is rated to carry that pin weigh, and I won't pretend to know better than those that built it and carry the warranty on it.
And you can get a well optioned reg cab with 3000# payload, not that I'd buy one either, but you stated it wasn't doable, now your saying that it is not desirable to you, there's a difference.
Our fleet runs 150HD's now instead of 250s to no ill effect. Better mileage, cheaper, nicer to drive, and so far, no added service issues. They save hundreds of thousands across NA with these, they are a good alternative financially, maybe no so much for the ego.....
