What does it take to make 20k mile oil?

One of my fravorite You Tuber's, Jason Fenske, at Engineering Explained gives us an inside look at what kind of R&D it takes to make a 20k mile oil. Notice the 500k test miles they put on the Silverado!

Now this isn't about what brand you prefer to use or which brand is better. It is just a good informative video on what it takes to get a new oil product to market, and maybe clear up some internet myths.

Can Engine Oil Be Proven To Last 20,000 Miles?

Enjoy!
  • its been 30 years ago now, but in our trucks (cummins and cat motors) we always had a 20,000 mile oil change interval. we used delo 400, and the oil didnt really seem too bad at that mileage.
most of the trucks needed about a gallon added at 15,000 to make it to 20,000 but the detriot motors needed a gallon added every week.

at an average of 2300 miles per week, it didnt take long to need another oil change.
I still use delo 400, but its not the same oil formulation today as it was back then..

many years ago.. AMZOIL stated right on there package.. 25,000 miles or one year.

AMZOIL.. later changed there name to AMSOIL...

    and dropped the 25,000 miles.

my Goldwing(1983) from 1,000 miles to 149,000 miles with oil changes every 25,000 miles and oil filters every 12,500 miles...
    time was not factored..

    never burned or used oil.

I ordered Amsoil for my truck, used it once and while I was doing it they dropped the extended range claim for diesel trucks. Have not used it since.
