I come from a tent and canoe background and the time with my kids and grand kids is priceless and more so as they grow older.
The DW and I are finishing up a two month tour of the South West and various relatives. All through our trip we saw dozens of rented motor coaches. Out west many were from roadbearrv.com. Big ones, little ones, all fairly new units.
Usually I tell folks to rent a TT similar to what they think they want but in your case, it might be easier to find a motor coach. It will tell you if you like to camp or not and introduce your family to long hours of travel with greater comfort than a car or truck.
There are a lot of unexpecteds with an RV. 250 to 300 mile days, 10 mpg, care and up keep like a boat. Renting introduces you to some of these without the big financial commitment.
Good luck,
