What in the world to do about TERRIBLE bunkends?

I had a 2007 Kodiak 23TT with three of the canvas bunkends. I had to drive 9 hours away to find one without the "fast asleep" bunkends.

The tenting was made by National Tent, which was bought out by Lippert Components in 2010.
