Yes, most of them are designed for drywall. Not 1/8-3/16" plywood over foam. That's why I've always preferred pop rivets (or these Oscar rivets).
But for something heavy, attaching to a stud would be best. But what if it's Aluminum? Guess some trailers use hollow box Al and you can use self-tapping screws if its thick enough. Or maybe drill through and use an expandable anchor inside the Al hollow box.
