Stud finder shows nothing except where the interior wall corners ( perpendicular ) with outside wall. Something in the " T " . Don't know if it is wood or metal yet. If I can move the shelf to the corner may be able to get a screw in the stud at top and bottom. Should hold it if I can.
I do this kind of stuff all the time so I can take my hammer handle and tap on the wall to find a stud. The sound will change when on a stud. To verify, use a small finishing nail tapped through the paneling. If you have a miss, fill the tiny hole with wall spackle. After finding stud locations and leveling the hole locations, drill a hole to accommodate a large sheet metal screw. If you have a lot of weight, the addition of some glue to the back surfaces of the shelf always helps.
