I always have pretty good luck in the mornings by looking at the sweat line...
My gauge seems to always read the poining in the green everytime I look at it. I put one of those red strips on the side of the tank one time and it does pretty good showing where the propane is on the inside of the tank...
Works even better if you pour some of hot coffee down it especially again in the mornings...
I have seen some guys just run their hand down the side of the tank and I guess they can feel where the propane level is on the inside... Always felt the same for me haha...
Using a weight scale would be some work effort for me to free up the bottle from their installed position... I always hate to mess with the propane connections if I don't have to...
